Professor Alan C Roberts OBE TD DL CStJ MPhil PhD LLD FIBiol



Professor Roberts was Pro-Chancellor of the University of Leeds from 1986-2000. He is a Consultant Clinical Scientist and Director of the Centre for Clinical Prosthetics, Dept of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Bradford Teaching Hospitals.

He is Chairman of the Bradford Research Ethics Committee, and Professor of Biomaterials in Surgery at the Academic Surgical Unit, School of Medicine, University of Hull and Professor of Biomaterials, University of Bradford. He is Honorary Sub Dean, Royal Society of Medicine, Northern and Yorkshire Region and Honorary Treasurer of the RSM. He is Director of the Biomaterials Research Unit, University of Bradford and former joint Director of the Institute of Health Research. He was awarded the Prince Philip Medal for Research in the field of implantation materials in 1970, and awarded the MBE for services to Medical Science in 1982, and the OBE in 2002.

He has served as an Aide-de-camp to Her Majesty the Queen from 1980-83. He is a Deputy Lord Lieutenant for West Yorkshire and a Justice of the Peace for Leeds Courts. He has held numerous visiting Professor appointments throughout the world. He is a member of the advisory board, University of Malaysia, School of Medicine and an examiner to the University of Sheffield, School of Clinical Dentistry. He was a Council of Europe Fellow to Sweden in 1968 and holds the medal of Honour of the Red Cross and is a Commander of the Most Venerable Order of St. John.

He is a chartered Biologist, and an honorary member of the United States Research Society, Fellows of the Institute of Biology, a Fellow of the City & Guilds of London Institute, a Fellow of the Linnean Society, and a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a Companion of Honour Institute of Mechanical Engineers for Medical Engineering.

He served on the National Council of the Red Cross and was national chairman of the Council of Military Education Committees, United Kingdom Universities. He as awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa by the University of Leeds. He was President of the City & Guilds of London Institute Association 1997-2002 and Deputy Chairman, Council of the United Kingdom Universities 1993-1998; he was President of the Bradford Medico Chirurgical Society 1998, a member of the National Advisory Board, NHS Executive on Intellectual Property in Research. He is an honorary Liveryman of the Clothworkers Company and a Freeman of the City of London. His research interests are wound healing and implantation.

He has a parallel career in the Reserved Forces and was Deputy Commander North East District from 1980-1983 and is a Colonel Commandant (RA) and a Regimental Colonel of two regiments. His hobbies are sculpture and silver and became Dean in 2006.
